11:00 12:30 Science Products
The invited talks underpin that the contributions of SLR and LLR to science are indeed important and manifold. They include: the maintenance of the long-term stability of the low-degree and order geopotential (including the geocenter); contributions to the terrestrial reference frame (where heights are of particular interest); contributions to the determination of the Earth rotation parameters; modelling of non-gravitational forces for Laser satellites; calibration of satellite orbits determined using the GNSS techniques (SLR/LLR is the only space-geodetic techniques working in the optical part of the spectrum); combination of SLR/LLR results with those of other space-geodetic techniques; the well-known products from LLR (test of gravitational theories, lunar rotation, development of the Earth-Moon-Sun three-body problem). We foster contributions to this broad range of topics and to possible future development based on the laser technology (like, e.g., the use of the transponder technology for measuring distances to the Moon, to space missions to the Moon and planets, and to other planets).

16:00 17:30 Kilohertz Systems
We consider that one of the important keys to 'extending the range' is to increase the laser repetition rate from the traditional few Hz towards kHz rates. High-rate SLR has many advantages and new applications, including increased normal point precision, rapid target acquisition, target structure 'probing' leading to, for example, attitude determination, ability to work with reduced peak energies and with very short pulse lengths and ranging to transponders on remote spacecraft. A further spin-off advantage from developing a kHz capability is the need to upgrade time-of-flight measurement sub-systems to those based on an accurate event-timer, with corresponding improvement in measurement linearity. KHz work is underway at Graz, is being tested within the SLR2000 system and is at the development stage at Herstmonceux. Further, we suspect that other groups and analysts will be interested in getting involved with this emerging technology and its exciting possibilities for new and more accurate scientific applications. We invite contributions to this session to discuss plans, experiences and application ideas for high-rate laser ranging.
